Vanguard recently announced ETFs in their lineup that will be distributing capital gains to unit holders for 2014. These include:

  • Extended Duration Treasury ETF (EDV)
  • Intermediate-Term Bond ETF (BIV)
  • Intermediate-Term Corporate Bond ETF (VCIT)
  • Long-Term Bond ETF (BLV)
  • Mortgage-Backed Securities ETF (VMBS)
  • Short-Term Bond ETF (BSV)
  • Short-Term Corporate Bond ETF (VCSH)
  • Short-Term Government Bond ETF (VGSH)
  • Total Bond Market ETF (BND)

Details on the exact distributions, as well as declaration, record, ex-dividend and payable dates can be found on the Vanguard website.

Capital gains distributions for securities shouldn’t create any tax obligations for securities held in qualified accounts, such as IRAs, Roth IRAs or 401(ks), but for taxable accounts, investors will receive 1099s and will have to report the gains on their 2014 income tax return.  ETF Model SolutionsTM includes the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF in our Endowment Multi-Asset ETF Collective Investment Fund.
