While ETFs are mostly tax efficient, especially compared to most mutual funds, there are some ETFs that do incur capital gains distributions annually.  iShares recently announced the ETFs that will be subject to a distribution for 2014.

  • iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG)
  • iShares Global ex USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYXU)
  • iShares iBonds Mar 2016 Corporate ex-Financials ETF (IBCB)
  • iShares Liquidity Income ETF (ICSH)
  • iShares Morningstar Multi-Asset Income ETF (IYLD)
  • iShares Yield Optimized Bond ETF (BYLD)
  • iShares MSCI Frontier 100 ETF (FM)
  • iShares MSCI Ireland Capped ETF (EIRL)
  • iShares MSCI Malaysia ETF (EWM)
  • iShares International Select Dividend ETF (IDV)
  • iShares Currency Hedged MSCI EAFE ETF (HEFA)
  • iShares Currency Hedged MSCI EMU ETF (HEZU)
  • iShares Currency Hedged MSCI Germany ETF (HEWG)
  • iShares Currency Hedged MSCI Japan ETF (HEWJ)
  • iShares Core Total USD Bond Market ETF (IUSB)

Capital gains distributions for securities shouldn’t create any tax obligations for securities held in qualified accounts, such as IRAs, Roth IRAs or 401(ks), but for taxable accounts, investors will receive 1099s and will have to report the gains on their 2014 income tax return.

ETF Model SolutionsTM utilizes several of the above ETFs within our ETF Models or Endowment Multi-Asset ETF Allocation, including: the iShares MSCI Frontier 100 ETF as an emerging markets satellite allocation in the Endowment Multi-Asset ETF Allocation, a collective investment fund for 401(k) and other retirement plans. iShares Global ex USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYXU)  is used as an international bond allocation in the ETF Model SolutionsTMShort Duration Fixed Income Allocation and our Global Fixed Income Allocation for SMA/UMA accounts.  iShares International Select Dividend ETF (IDV) is an allocation holding in our Global Equity Allocation Model.

The list, along with the specific long and short-term distributions, the ex-dividend date and the payment dates can be found on the iShares website.
